Rat Care Recommendations - Page 3

Choosing an appropriate diet for your rats is extremely important. A proper diet will help keep your rats healthy and happy, but with so many commercially available options it can be difficult to know what to choose. On this page, I will go over some of the more readily available rat food options as well as healthy supplemental options and treats. I'll also go over some of the foods that really should be avoided.

Recommended Base Diets

A base diet is the main food you would be feeding your rats. The best options for base diets are block foods. While they may not seem very exciting as they lack variety, feeding a quality base diet is extremely important. A block food that is properly formulated and nutritionally sound will provide the rat with everything they need. Mixed diets may seem much more fun and exciting, but many rats will pick and choose the bits and pieces they want to eat out of a mix and leave the rest, which would mean they are not getting the nutrition they need.

Below I will include a few good options for base diets. While some are better than others ingredient-wise, these are all safe choices that will meet your rats' nutritional needs.
